No, it’s not the West Coast Woodstock, but close – Christopher Ranch’s California heirloom garlic harvest is almost underway, starting in early June and continuing through August. This is good news, as it means the beginning of fresh, California-grown garlic 365 days a year.
However, a few preemptive steps must be taken before we begin bringing that bold, smooth, nutty goodness straight from the ground to your plate.
Today, for instance, we started digging – the first of many harvest stages. A few days ago we cut the water, giving the cloves their last water until harvest. Applying the correct amount of water is critical to finishing the garlic cloves.
Keep in mind, garlic takes nine months to grow – much like a baby – and Christopher Ranch farms as sustainably as possible to produce fresh, flavorful, safe garlic that doesn’t compromise the land.
For example, we:
* Only plant on fields once every four years to prevent overfarming of the soil and ensure all soil nutrients are replenished.
* Practice drip irrigation, which applies the precise amount of water directly on plants when irrigating, eliminating excess. As a result, we’ve cut our water use about 10%.
* Use 50% lower pesticide and fertilizer levels than suggested. Christopher Ranch’s fresh garlic is certified NutriClean “Pesticide Residue Free,” and is the only fresh garlic to earn such a recognition. This is another step we’ve taken to provide safe, healthy garlic, as pesticide residues are any substance used to control pests, including herbicides and fungicides, and are a potential food contaminant.
Start salivating…the most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us. It’s even better than the holidays – you get to enjoy California garlic year round.
